BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS (cont)
The "Guide" recommends the separation of primate species because of the possibility of inter-species transmission of occult viruses from carrier to host. For example, squirrel monkeys are often latently infected with Herpesvirus tamarinus which can be transmitted to owl monkeys and cause a fatal epizootic disease.
Any sick primates must be isolated and treated. Thorough necropsy - including histopathology - should be performed to ascertain the cause of death.
