EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES

Since experimental procedures have the potential for injuring an animal - experience becomes the best teacher.  New research staff members must learn from an experienced operator and practice under supervision.

Blood samples are commonly obtained from the vessels of the ear of the rabbit.

Small amounts of blood may be obtained from the rabbit by pricking the ear vein, allowing the blood to pool very briefly and then collecting into capillary tubes.  If the blood does not flow freely and pool quickly you should re-stick or consider using another method.
