HOUSING AND SOCIAL NEEDS (cont)
Concerns about a rabbit's social environment involve behaviors associated with breeding and reproduction. For example, the doe should always be brought to the buck's cage for breeding. If the buck is brought to the doe she will often attack him as an "intruder". Also, he may show more interest in the novel surroundings of her cage than in breeding.
A few days before parturition a nesting box containing bedding material must be provided for the doe. This bedding may be straw, wood shavings or some other appropriate material and should be obtained from a supplier with clean vermin-proof facilities. The doe will build a nest using both the material provided plus fur that she plucks from her own coat. The nesting box must be large enough for the doe to occupy without crushing or crowding the kitlings.
