BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
One of the veterinarian's major responsibilities is to provide a preventative medicine program for research animals. There are several aspects to a sound program;
- purchase animals only from reliable commercial sources that certify the health status of the animals
- let animals have a time to stabilize in the new environment after receipt in a quarantine room - this quarantine period should be sufficient to insure that they are free of disease or abnormalities.
- separate animals both by species and commercial source to reduce the possibility of disease transmission
