HOUSING AND SOCIAL NEEDS
Swine require sturdy housing and should be kept in pens not cages. Typically pens are constructed of stainless steel or aluminum bars or chain link fencing.
Flooring should provide for steady footing, especially when wet. Raised flooring using fiberglass slats or vinyl-coated metal is commonly used. If raised flooring is not available then the floor should be rough in texture.
Deep bedding with wood shavings can provide adequate footing and also provides for their need to root with their snouts. Using grit in the flooring surface also provides wear for their hooves, negating the need to periodically trim them.
